COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – A downtown sports and event center, once envisioned as a critical piece of the city for champions tourism initiative, now appears to be dead.
Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers says the venue would need about $28 million in local public financing to help build it.
The Gazette reports, Suthers said he wouldn’t rule out the facility from being built, but he can’t support paying for it with local public money.
There are other priorities for the city, including stormwater issues. operators of the National Museum of World War II Aviation, which opened at the Colorado
Springs Airport in 2012, say they’re open to taking the place of the sports and event center in the city for champions mix.
