DENVER (AP) – Investigators say an Army vehicle took the wrong road in the dark and was making a U-turn when it tumbled 250 feet off a cliff at a Colorado training range last year, killing one soldier and injuring five.
Investigators also said medical personnel had recommended that the soldier who died shouldn’t go on the exercise because of an unspecified condition. But it wasn’t clear if his condition was a factor in the 2015 crash of a Stryker vehicle at Fort Carson.
The Associated Press obtained the investigators’ report Monday through an open records request. Previously, the Army had released few details.
Staff Sgt. Justin Holt of Bogata, Texas, was killed. The others weren’t identified.
The Army initially said six soldiers were injured, not five. Officials didn’t immediately respond to requests for clarification.
