Tom Hanks, in “A League Of Their Own” had a great line, when talking to Geena Davis, who had quit baseball, saying it was too hard. Hanks looked at her and said, “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great!!” It’s still my favorite movie line and could describe the path the Air Force football team is now on. Hard. After losing at Michigan the Falcons now must face 22nd ranked San Diego State Saturday at Falcon Stadium at 5pm on KVOR. The Aztecs roll in at 3-0, following the win over Stanford. They have won 6 in a row over Air Force, are playing great defense, and have, arguably one of the best runners in the country in Rashaad Penny. This is the second game in a 4 game stretch that will include games at New Mexico and Navy…..After taking a step back from Saturday’s loss a few things come to mind. They may seem like criticisms. I prefer to suggest they are opportunities. Such as-Tim Mcvey needs to get the ball more. He had more touches against VMI than Michigan? Yes. He is your best talent. Find ways to get him the ball. I get it, teams can take some things away from an offense, but find a way to get Mcvey the ball….The Falcons need to play with a bit more of a swagger on offense. They have a lot of formations they can use to confuse defenses. And get the ball to your playmakers. Arion Worthman ran 26 times against Michigan. Yes he is a playmaker but not the only one. Must get others involved. Meanwhile the defense will have its hands full this weekend with Penny. However, they showed great fortitude in holding the Wolverines offense to 5 field goals until a late rushing TD. The Aztecs rushing attack, New Mexico’s option, and Navy’s bruising ground game all await. If they can play through the gauntlet like they did in Ann Arbor, good things can happen…The Falcons find themselves in a delicate position, though not unexpected. 1-1 through 2 games can’t turn into 1-4 after 5 contests. The schedule is front loaded with monster games. The Falcons have to steer their way through. It continues Saturday.
Join us Wednesday night for the Troy Calhoun Show at CB and Potts at I-25 and Northgate…and bring your radios to Falcon Stadium for Saturdays contest against San Diego St at 5pm on 740 KVOR.
