A 1-3 start for the Air Force Football team has a lot of fans wondering if it’s going to be a long, losing season. After falling to New Mexico the Falcons play in Annapolis Saturday at Navy at 130 on 740 KVOR. It’s been a tough schedule, and you got the feeling last week that even if the Falcons had 15 people playing defense the Lobos would still score. Every so often in sports one team just happens to have the other teams number. New Mexico is always a bad match up for the Falcons because, in addition to running a speed option attack, they have very good athletes at the skill positions. It’s the worse combination for Air Force. Not that Saturday at Navy gets any easier. But at this point after 3 straight losses Air Force may have to worry more about themselves than the opponents. The offense was better vs New Mexico. The defense took a step back. Getting both to play well at the same time in the same game has been an effort this year. Navy is flying high. They’re 4-0. The Midshipmen did not play well early last week but still won. They have something to prove. Last year they lost to both Air Force and Army. The last time that happened was 14 years ago. That’s a big motivator as they open the Commander in Chiefs series Saturday. The schedule does get easier, on paper anyway, for Air Force after Saturday. There’s hope that this young, in spots, football team is growing and can find a win sooner than later. At this point after 3 straight losses, you can hear the late Al Davis saying, “Just Win Baby!!” If the Falcons can clean up mistakes from last week, they can win Saturday. But another loss would give fans more reasons to wonder if the season is slipping away.
