Saturday at Falcon Stadium Air Force hosts the Army Black Knights. Army is second in the nation in rushing, and Air Force is 3rd. There won’t be a lot of secrets between these two teams. In my mind this game comes down to a test of wills, and bravado. Who will be tougher on the line of scrimmage? ..Who’s running backs will be better getting through holes and in the open field? Who’s defense stands tall and slows down the opposition and turns them into something they are not? The other part of it, for me, is bravado. Who will have the guts to think outside the box, if need be, with their offense? That’s where I feel the Falcons have an advantage. Air Force Offensive Coordinator Mike Thiessen has a large playbook, and if the Black Knights defense stands up the Air Force rushing attack I believe Thiessen will have answers for that, especially if Army starts to edge closer to the line of scrimmage to slow the run. Two years ago, I watched Army, at Falcon Stadium, very, very early in the game, punt the ball from the Falcon 41 on a 4th and 1. They had a losing record, they were not going to a bowl. So Jeff Monken decided to play field position. I guess it’s not a bad call, but geez, how bout showing some faith in your offense, or showing some bravado. That’s where I believe the Falcons have an advantage. To be fair, Monken brings in his best football team Saturday in his 4 years at West Point, but in a game that is close on paper, you have to show some moxy, and some faith. We’ll see who gets tested and who can think out of the box on Saturday.
