COLORADO – A Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputy is recovering in serious but stable condition at a Denver hospital after being shot multiple times while responding to a theft call near Hugo at about 3:15 a.m. Thursday morning. A professional truck driver called 911 after he saw someone trying to break into a truck parked along Highway 40 near Highway 287.
Deputy Michael Hutton responded to the call and he was shot multiple times by a male suspect with a handgun, The driver also received minor injuries in the shooting and he refused treatment. Deputy Hutton was wearing a bulletproof vest and authorities say it didn’t appear to be damaged. Lincoln County Sheriff’s Captain Michael Yellen says Deputy Hutton’s body-cam was activated and it helped to communicate what he couldn’t.
The suspect is not being identified at this time, but he was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound about a thousand yards away from where the shooting took place. Captain Yellen said investigators looked there because of something that was out of place compared to the rest of the green grass in the area.
