CAÑON CITY – It’s incredibly important to make sure your pets are vaccinated against rabies and that their shots are current. The Fremont County Health Department says a skunk tested positive for rabies in Cañon City. The state health department notified the county of the positive test on Tuesday.

The skunk came into contact with a pet that did not have an up-to-date rabies vaccination and now the health department is working with the owners of the pet to determine what to do next.  Fremont County is urging pet owners to make sure rabies vaccinations are up to date and to avoid contact with wild animals, especially those exhibiting strange or aggressive behavior. Rabies can be fatal.
