A total of 8,500 U.S. soldiers, including troops stationed at Fort Carson, are now on heightened alert due to the build-up of Russian troops near the Ukrainian border. While it’s currently unclear exactly how many soldiers are on alert, some are members of the 4th Infantry Division. Press personnel at the Pentagon have said that if needed, these troops could be deployed in Europe to support a NATO response to an invasion of Ukraine. Medical, aviation, logistic and combat units have also been placed on alert at bases in Texas, Arizona, Washington and Ohio.
