The Arvada Police Department and the family of John Hurley have reached a settlement. Hurley was killed by police two years ago during a shooting in Old Town Arvada. According to investigators, Hurley likely prevented a larger loss of life when he shot and killed an active shooter. However, an officer shot and killed Hurley when he mistook the good Samaritan for the gunman. The lawsuit states that Hurley died needlessly because an officer failed to confront the gunman, announce himself, and verify that Hurley was a threat. Arvada police officer Gordon Beesley was also killed in the shooting.
