A perfect day. Beautiful weather. Empower Field. Service Academy rival. The makings for a great day. And it was-for Army. If you try to explain what happened to Air Force last Saturday afternoon you just can’t. No amount of verbiage or education can help one find the words to describe the Falcons loss to the Black Knights. That’s football. It happens. The move into the College Football top 25 Playoff rankings, 1 of 9 teams undefeated, a possible New Years Day Bowl. All those things were left on the field in Denver. However…So much still to play for. I understand the importance of the Commander In Chiefs Trophy. But this AF team has put itself in position to do what no other team has done. Win a Mountain West Conference championship. That thought drives this team. Air Force tripped last Saturday. They can’t stumble in the next 3 weeks. Again, they control their own destiny. The Falcons stand on the verge of school history. It’s a big deal. You can argue it’s bigger than the CIC. Want to set yourself apart? Want to etch your name in school history? Win the MW Conference Championship. 3 games to get there, starting Saturday in Hawaii. Long trip. Tough place to play. No excuses. You want to be special? Start by winning Saturday and setting up perhaps a winner take all in the home finale against UNLV. But remember enough of last week so the years-worth of mistakes you made in that game serves as a motivator, and not a roadblock. They never remember how you start. They’ll always remember how you finish.
