A sheepherder in the Durango area is recovering from serious injuries after he was attacked by a bear. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the attack happened near a camp in the Weminuche wilderness north of Pagosa Springs. Around 1 am Tuesday, the man says he woke to the sounds of the bear attacking his sheep. When he got up, he fired a shot at the bear but was still attacked. The man crawled to his tent and called a family member, who then called emergency crews. The victim was airlifted to a local hospital. CPW tracked down the bear and euthanized it. Authorities have not released the victim’s name.
