Colorado Attorney General Tries To Block Merger Between Kroeger and Albertsons

COLORADO ATTORNEY GENERAL PHIL WEISER ANNOUNCED WEDNESDAY HE IS FILING A SUIT TO BLOCK THE POTENTIAL MERGER BETWEEN THE PARENT COMPANIES OF KING SOOPERS AND SAFEWAY. 2 YEARS AGO THOSE COMPANIES,. KROEGER AND ALBERTSONS, ANNOUNCED A MERGER IN WHICH KROGER WOULD ASSUME OPERATIONS OF THE TWO GROCERY STORE CHAINS IN A DEAL VALUED AT SOME 25 BILLION DOLLARS. WEISER SAYS IF THE DEAL GOES THROUGH IT WILL BE BAD FOR CONSUMERS, ESPECIALLY IN SMALLER COMMUNITIES. HE CITES ANOTHER GROCERY STORE MERGER AS EVIDENCE. KING SOOPERS AND SAFEWAY SAY THEY WILL SELL 50 STORES AS PART OF THE MERGER, AND THAT NO FRONTLINE EMPLOYEES WILL LOSE JOBS.
