COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – The El Paso County Sheriff’s office has released the name of a man who shot and killed himself in a patrol car after a standoff Tuesday.

Investigators initially went to a home on Western Hills Drive to check on 36-year-old Carlos Mendoza’s welfare. He was later arrested for possession of meth.

While he was being taken to jail, he was able to bring his handcuffs from the back of his body to the front and pulled out a gun. The deputy transporting Mendoza fled and called for help.

After attempting to negotiate with Mendoza for several hours, officers deployed tear gas and Mendoza shot himself. He died at a hospital.

The incident remains under investigation.
