A convicted sex criminal will spend the rest of his life in prison for murdering three members of a Canon City family.
31-year-old Jaacob Van Winkle pleaded guilty yesterday to all 36 charges against him in exchange for a life sentence. Vanwinkle fatally stabbed a 35-year-old woman, her 9-year-old daughter, and 5-year-old son in March. He also sexually assaulted her 16-year-old daughter, who escaped.
In 2004, Van Winkle was convicted of child molestation and other sex crimes involving girls as young as 5 in Indiana. He failed to register as a sex offender after moving to Colorado. He’ll begin serving his sentence in September.
