COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – A massive firefighting supertanker, based at the Colorado Springs Airport, has finally been granted permission to operate in the US.

But because of a lack of contracts, it can only fly in Douglas County and California.

The aircraft can carry more than 19,000 gallons of water or retardant.

Global Supertanker Services CEO Jim Wheeler tells the Denver Post the company is close to signing a contract with two states.

If they can get a contract with the forest service, states that use it would be able to be reimbursed by the federal government.
