DENVER – Denver police say at least one person is facing assault charges after a gathering in support of law enforcement in Denver’s Civic Center Park on Sunday. People showed up for the sixth annual “Law Enforcement Appreciation Day” event which was scheduled to run from 3:00-6:00 p.m.
The event was derailed by anti-police protesters, who outnumbered the pro-police demonstrators, eventually driving them out of the park. The counter-protest was organized by Denver Homeless Out Loud, Aurora Copwatch and the Party for Socialism and Liberation, and they were scheduled in the park from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. The Counter-protesters marched from the lawn of the Colorado State Capitol toward the pro-law enforcement event shortly after it began.
Lillian House with the Party for Socialism and Liberation, told 9 News in Denver, that they wanted to make noise and make it impossible for the law enforcement supporters to have the fun, celebratory experience they wanted to have. Denver police used pepper balls and a spray similar to pepper spray. Anti-police protesters said the celebration was out of touch and unacceptable.
