DENVER, CO – Scores are expected in Denver today for a funeral procession for a firefighter who died after falling through a skylight while battling a blaze in June.

The procession is for 46-year-old John Whelan, who died Wednesday night after shortness of breath sent him to the hospital and he went into cardiac arrest. The 15-year department veteran died of complications from his injuries in the fall.

The procession will begin in Arvada before heading through Denver and on to a cemetery in Golden.

Whelan fell about 20 feet as he checked to make sure a dumpster fire hadn’t spread to a nearby building on June 28.

He was expected to survive and had been sent home from the hospital before his death.
